Designing, Detailing, Fabricating, Erecting and Inspecting Steel Structures to Resist Brittle Fracture [M8] 2024

Brittle fracture is a rare event in traditional steel buildings subject to static loading. Under conditions of low temperature, high restraint and low redundancy, the concerns of brittle fracture increase. Key points make in the new Design Guide on this topic will be presented, including a review of the basics of brittle fracture, how to identify connections that may be vulnerable to fracture, and most importantly, a list of practical techniques that may be employed to increase fracture resistance. The presentation will be of interest to designers, detailers, fabricators, erectors and educators. While the focus will be on statically loaded building structures, the lecture will be of interest to those involved in seismic design, as well as those involved with bridges.
