After being built in the early 1960s, the United States Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel is currently undergoing a major recladding renovation. As part of the project, a structural assessment of the original steel tetrahedron framing was performed, which included a field investigation, a wind tunnel study, and a detailed finite element analysis of the structure. Results were compared against current code requirements, and against the original engineering design that was performed without todays sophisticated design tools. The results are presented in a case study that compares structural engineering methods from then and now.
