Ductility and Brittle Fracture: Another View, Part 2 (PDH)

Presented by: Duane K. Miller, Sc.D., P.E.

People often say that "steel is an inherently ductile material"--but that statement doesn’t explain why steel occasionally behaves in a brittle manner. The first session of this two-part webinar series will examine the role of shear stresses and ductility, explain how to achieve ductility, and provide some insight into how to use Mohr's Circle to easily explain ductility. Session two examines brittle fracture from a holistic perspective, considering the many variables that lead to brittle fracture. We’ll use four case studies to illustrate the effect of these variables. The session concludes with 48 practical ideas that will increase the resistance of a structure to brittle fracture.

This course is based on a past AISC Live Webinar.
