Design Steel Your Way [K2]

This is the 5th in a series of keynote addresses by the Steel Conference Speaker Award recipients. These keynotes have all had a common thread: the understanding that all we accomplish as structural engineers is, in some way, based on what those who came before us have accomplished. And this years presentation continues that tradition. Louis F. Geschwindner, PE, PhD, is the former vice president of engineering and research for AISC and has taught at Penn State for more than half a century. He is uniquely positioned to look at some aspects of the historical development of structural steel design and how we progressed from those early stages to where we are today. His presentation will look at how beam design has changed, what has happened with design loads, how we understand the safety of our designs, and the development of the unified AISC Specification. Although our design equations have changed, the contents of our typical home or office have changed, and the color of our Steel Construction Manual has changed, there are many aspects of steel design that remain unchanged. As the presentation looks at what has changed, it is intended that the things that remain unchanged, such as Theres Always a Solution in Steel be remembered.
